Father George Hosko, C.S.B., died peacefully on the morning of December 25, 2016 at approximately 5:30 a.m. He was 76 years old. Father Hosko faithfully served God as a holy priest throughout his life as a Basilian.
Boh vás žehnaj (God Bless You) Father George Hosko.
Father George Hosko served as The Doherty Library’s Inter-library Loan (ILL) Librarian from 1997 – 2016 at The University of Saint Thomas – Houston. Fr. Hosko studied theology at the University of St. Michael’s in Toronto, Canada and studied library science as Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was ordained as a Basilian Father in Detroit, Michigan during 1968. Shortly after ordination, Fr. Hosko began his career as a librarian, holding library positions in Windsor Ontario, followed by Detroit, Albuquerque, and Phoenix before coming to Houston to work at St. Thomas High School. He then joined the University of St. Thomas (UST) in 1997 as the Head of Inter-library Loan Department.
Fr. Hosko loved swimming, loved and supported the arts (he was a huge opera fan). He kept up on local and national politics and the politics of the Church as well. He was willing to discuss the issues of the day at any time. He signed his letters “Boh vás žehnaj,” (God Bless You) and all that knew him, knew him as a kind, dedicated, curious and involved priest who was faithful to prayer.
